It began with a Facebook message from a "woman" calling herself "Nisha". It ended with the body of a man hidden beneath stones beside a railway track.

Police in Gujarat's Rajkot district have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly murdering another man who had pretended to be a woman in order to get into a relationship with him and had been following him to several cities.

The case came to light on June 25 when a decomposed body, dressed in women's clothing, was found near railway tracks in rural Rajkot. The death was initially treated as accidental, but with post-mortem indicating severe head injuries, the police launched a murder investigation.

Using CCTV footage, technical surveillance and human intelligence, investigators identified and arrested Piyush Kumar Kharwar, 20, a native of Uttar Pradesh. According to Rajkot Rural SP Vijay Singh Gurjar, the accused confessed to the crime during questioning.

Police said Piyush had come into contact with a Chandan Kumar in Hyderabad after the two connected on social media. According to investigators, Chandan introduced himself as a woman, using the name "Nisha Kumar" on Facebook and "Poonam" on Instagram.

Believing Chandan to be a woman, Piyush started a relationship with him and the two later began living together. Police said Chandan cited religious beliefs to refuse physical intimacy.

The relationship took a dramatic turn when Piyush allegedly saw Chandan shaving and realised that the person he had believed to be a woman all along was in fact a man looking for a same-sex relationship.

Piyush's findings led to frequent arguments between the two, with him wanting to end the relationship.

Investigators said Chandan kept pursuing Piyush even as he moved for work from Hyderabad to Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and later Rajkot district, with Chandan allegedly following him to different locations.

Finally, on June 21, according to police, the two had a heated argument at a factory in Rajkot's Padvala village. Investigators allege that Piyush then took Chandan to a secluded spot near a railway track and fatally attacked him with large stones before attempting to conceal the body under rocks.

A case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder), and further investigation is underway.
