UP trader gets call from wife's phone, finds her with slit throat, severed ears
An open cupboard, a plate of sweets and two glasses of water have emerged as key clues in the killing of a Saharanpur woman. Investigators believe the victim may have let her attacker into the house, while police are probing whether an old personal rivalry triggered the murder.

A 60-year-old woman was found murdered with her throat slit and her ears severed in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur. Her husband, spare-parts trader Sanjay Mittal, rushed home on Monday after receiving a call from his wife's phone and becoming alarmed when there was no response from the other end.
Police are hunting for the perpetrators and suspect that the murder may have stemmed from an old enmity.
The crime first came to light at around 4 pm when Mittal received the call from his wife's phone. Sensing that something was wrong, he returned home accompanied by a doctor. They found the main door open and discovered the body of Poonam Mittal lying inside. She had deep wounds on her neck, and the earrings she had been wearing were missing.
The police found an open cupboard, a plate of sweets and two glasses of water in the drawing room, raising several questions about the circumstances leading to the murder.
Preliminary findings suggest that the attacker may have been someone known to the victim, as she appeared to have willingly allowed the person into the house.
Police said there were no clear signs of robbery, leading investigators to suspect that the killing may have been linked to an old rivalry or personal enmity.
Police and forensic teams reached the scene soon after being informed and began collecting evidence. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhinandan said initial observations indicate that the perpetrator was likely someone familiar to the family.
"Police officers and the forensic team immediately reached the spot. Based on the initial assessment of the crime scene, it appears that the person who committed the crime was known to the victim. There is an injury on the neck caused by a sharp object. The house door was open from the inside, and local residents have told us that the gate is usually opened only for someone known to the family," he told India Today.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case is being registered. Six teams have been formed to investigate the murder and identify the accused.
The incident sparked anger among local traders, who shut their businesses and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
"The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A case is being registered based on the complaint received. We have formed six teams and will ensure that the case is solved at the earliest," SSP Abhinandan added.
