Sonipat encounter: Bullet hits inspector's bulletproof vest, 2 held
Sonipat Police's Crime Unit-1 exchanged fire with two alleged history-sheeters near Gaurad village late at night. An inspector was saved by his bulletproof jacket, while police widened the probe into the duo's possible wider links.
A late-night encounter broke out between the Sonipat Police’s Crime Unit-1 and two notorious criminals in the fields near Gaurad village, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, several rounds of firing were exchanged from both sides during the operation. Inspector Rajeev narrowly escaped injury after a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket during the gunfight.
One of the accused sustained a bullet injury in his leg during the encounter, while the second suspect was arrested from the spot.
The injured criminal has been identified as Raju alias Banda, a resident of Kidoli village. The second accused, identified as Sanjay from Bahadurgarh, was taken into custody and is currently being interrogated by police officials.
Police said both accused are history-sheeters and have more than a dozen criminal cases registered against them, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity and violations under the Arms Act.
During the operation, police recovered an illegal .32 bore pistol and an iron spike-like tool used for breaking ice from the possession of the accused.
Raju, who suffered a bullet injury in the leg, was admitted to Kharkhoda Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment under police security.
Senior officers of the Sonipat Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the encounter. The area was later cordoned off and searched as part of the investigation.
Police officials said they are probing the case and further questioning of the arrested accused is underway to ascertain whether the duo was involved in other criminal activities in Haryana and neighbouring states.
