TVK ally IUML ends 60-year alliance with DMK, backs Vijay's party for local polls
IUML has quit the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu and joined Vijay's TVK for the local body polls. The shift ends a nearly six-decade partnership and resets alliance equations ahead of the elections.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has formally ended its decades-long association with the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu and expressed confidence in its new partnership with Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), party leaders said at the IUML State General Council meeting held on Friday.
Addressing the meeting, IUML National President KM Kader Mohideen said 481 members participated in the General Council, during which 14 resolutions were passed. He described the decision to realign politically in Tamil Nadu as one of the most significant resolutions adopted by the party.
"Respecting the mandate given by the people in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended its support for the formation of the TVK government and is currently a part of the administration led by Joseph Vijay. In the present political circumstances, it is not possible for us to continue our association with the DMK alliance," said Mohideen in the meeting.
He also added that the IUML meeting ensured that a decision regarding the electoral alliance will be taken once the by-elections and local body elections are officially announced.
'THE WHISTLE WAS BLOWN EVERYONE'
Mohideen highlighted the party's electoral performance, noting that IUML had contested 28 constituencies in Kerala and won 22 of them. In Tamil Nadu, he said, the party had secured victories in two constituencies as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Front with the support of the DMK and its allies.
Recalling the party's long-standing ties with the DMK, Mohideen said IUML had remained a part of the alliance for more than 60 years and had contested and won local body, Assembly and parliamentary elections under that banner. He said the party had strongly supported the formation of the current Dravidian Model government and worked towards MK Stalin becoming Chief Minister.
However, he indicated that changing political circumstances had prompted a shift in strategy. Referring to actor-politician Vijay's emergence in state politics, Mohideen said, "The whistle was blown everywhere and Vijay made history."
He noted that while the DMK-led alliance was known as the Secular Progressive Front, the new TVK-led alliance is yet to be formally named. Once a name is announced, IUML will officially use it.
Mohideen also said the party would seek opportunities to contest future by-elections if they arise. Looking ahead to the local body polls, he expressed confidence that IUML would secure a greater share of representation in areas with significant Muslim populations as part of its alliance with TVK.
