Cyrus Broacha on Assam's 'Hall of Shame' campaign against public urination

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, comedian Cyrus Broacha shared his views on Assam's Hall of Shame campaign targeting public urination and Indians' lack of civic sense and inadequate public infrastructure. Broacha supported Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora's suggestion to adopt the naming and shaming model in Mumbai, stating that fines are ineffective and public humiliation is necessary to create a deterrent. He highlighted the severe shortage of public restrooms, remarking, "I think the toilet is the ultimate minority of India, and that someone should, uh, finally stand up for the toilet." Broacha attributed the issue of public urination primarily to men, noting, "The Indian male is defective. Let's face that." He emphasised the need for early childhood education on civic responsibilities, suggesting that citizens need "toilet tuitions" starting at home to cultivate respect for public spaces. Broacha concluded that until basic etiquette is ingrained in society, naming and shaming remains a practical approach to curb public urination and littering across the country.
