Residents in Jammu’s Akhnoor witnessed an unprecedented weather phenomenon on Saturday evening when a rare tornado formed and was captured on camera, leaving people both excited and anxious. The whirling column of wind lasted nearly 10 minutes over an open field, according to Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the J&K Meteorological Department.
The sudden event followed a sharp change in weather, as clear skies gave way to dark clouds around 4:45 pm, bringing moderate rainfall and thundershowers. Officials said the tornado likely developed from a squall line triggered by thunderstorm cells.
Locals, unaccustomed to such occurrences, rushed indoors as dust and light debris were lifted into the air. Videos shared widely on social media reflected both curiosity and concern.
Authorities confirmed that no damage to life or property was reported. A rainbow later appeared, marking a calm end to the rare spectacle.
