Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swarup said the decision was taken because of forecasts of heavy rainfall and the increased risk of landslides along the Char Dham pilgrimage routes.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to remain on round-the-clock alert, clear blocked roads on priority and keep helicopter services ready for emergencies.
OVER 100 ROADS BLOCKED
Officials said landslides have blocked more than 100 roads, including two national highways, affecting travel across the state.
Schools for students from Classes 1 to 12 have been closed in Dehradun, Chamoli, Pauri and Rudraprayag districts due to safety concerns.
BRIDGE APPROACH ROAD COLLAPSES IN DEHRADUN
Heavy rain also disrupted traffic in Dehradun after the approach road to a bridge over the Tons River collapsed in the Premnagar area.
Officials said the bridge itself remained structurally safe, but continuous rainfall washed away the soil beneath the approach road. Restoration work by the Public Works Department and district administration helped restore traffic after nearly 12 hours.
