Indian Railways expands menstrual hygiene access across key northern stations
Women's hygiene, sanitary napkin vending machines and menstrual health are getting greater attention across Indian Railways, with Northern Railways and Indus Towers bringing free sanitary napkin access to 175 railway stations.

Northern Railways and Indus Towers have joined hands to improve women’s hygiene and menstrual health facilities across Indian Railways. Under the initiative, 500 sanitary napkin vending machines have been installed at 175 railway stations across the Delhi, Firozpur, Ambala, Moradabad and Lucknow divisions.
The machines provide free sanitary napkins to women travellers round the clock, helping address an essential need during travel.
Equipped with IoT-enabled monitoring systems, the machines have already dispensed around 3 crore sanitary napkins, making menstrual hygiene products more accessible at some of the country’s busiest railway stations.

The installation is part of Indus Towers’ CSR programme, Nari Samman, which operates under its broader initiative, Pragati.
The programme focuses on creating awareness, improving access and building community support around menstrual health and hygiene.
The initiative also supports the Government of India’s efforts to improve menstrual health awareness and access to sanitary products through the Menstrual Hygiene Scheme (MHS) under the National Health Mission.
FOCUS ON WOMEN TRAVELLERS
Rajesh Kumar Pandey, General Manager, Northern Railways, said, “Indian Railways serves millions of passengers every day, including millions of women and girls who depend on the network for work, education and healthcare. Ensuring their comfort, safety, and dignity remains a priority for us.”
He added that the partnership with Indus Towers is helping make public spaces more inclusive and supportive for women.
Tejinder Kalra, Chief Operating Officer, Indus Towers Ltd., said the large-scale rollout demonstrates the company’s experience in managing technology-enabled solutions across extensive public networks.

SUPPORTING SAFER AND MORE INCLUSIVE TRAVEL
The sanitary napkin vending machines add to Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to make travel safer and more comfortable for women.
Alongside women-reserved coaches and improvements in station facilities and sanitation, the programme addresses a basic but often overlooked requirement for women travellers.
The project is also part of Indus Towers’ wider CSR goal of positively impacting more than 150 million lives by 2030.
