Not Bengaluru or Mumbai: This city leads India's salary growth race
Chennai is projected to lead India's salary growth in FY27 with average increments of 9.7%, surpassing traditional pay hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai. Manufacturing-led cities such as Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur are also gaining ground, driven by investments in EVs, infrastructure, healthcare, and industrial development.

For years, conversations around salaries in India have largely revolved around Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi-NCR. But fresh projections for FY27 suggest a shift may be underway.
According to TeamLease's latest Jobs and Salaries Primer, Chennai is expected to record the highest average salary increment in the country at 9.7 per cent, narrowly ahead of Pune and Hyderabad, both projected at 9.6 per cent. The findings point to a growing influence of manufacturing, infrastructure, electric mobility, healthcare, and industrial investments in shaping compensation trends across India.
The report, based on responses from 1,268 businesses across 23 industries and 20 cities, estimates overall salary increments between 8.6 per cent and 10.2 per cent in FY27. However, regional trends indicate that some cities are pulling ahead faster than others.
A notable development is the rise of manufacturing-driven cities. Apart from Chennai, cities such as Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur are expected to post some of the strongest salary growth rates. Analysts attribute this to expanding industrial corridors, investments in electric vehicle infrastructure, and increasing demand for skilled technical talent.
TOP CITIES BY EXPECTED SALARY INCREMENT IN FY 2027
| Rank | Cities | Projected Salary Increment |
| 1 | Chennai | 9.7% |
| 2 | Pune | 9.6% |
| 2 | Hyderabad | 9.6% |
| 3 | Ahmedabad | 9.5% |
| 3 | Visakhapatnam | 9.5% |
| 4 | Nagpur | 9.4% |
The trend reflects how India's economic growth is becoming more geographically diversified. Chennai's leadership position is particularly significant given its growing prominence as a hub for automobile manufacturing, electronics production, and electric vehicle investments.
Pune and Hyderabad continue to benefit from a mix of technology, engineering, manufacturing, and shared services industries, while Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur are increasingly attracting industrial and infrastructure projects.
WHAT IS DRIVING THE SALARY SURGE?
The report suggests that companies are increasingly rewarding skills linked to future-focused industries. Electrical engineers working in the EV ecosystem are expected to receive the highest salary hikes at 11.2 per cent, followed by quality control inspectors (10.9 per cent), project engineers (10.7 per cent), and IT support executives (10.3 per cent).
As investments flow into electric mobility, infrastructure development, digital finance, healthcare, and energy, cities that serve as hubs for these sectors are likely to see stronger wage growth.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The salary map of India appears to be changing. While traditional metropolitan centres remain important employment hubs, FY27 projections suggest that manufacturing and industrial cities are increasingly becoming the engines of wage growth. If these trends continue, cities such as Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur could play a much larger role in India's compensation landscape than they have in the past.
