Fashion gloves are chic, and Tara Sutaria's all-black look will Cannes-vince you

It's Tara Sutaria's vintage-themed debut at Cannes and everyone else is simply living in it! The actor made her second Cannes appearance in a black ensemble with opera gloves, bringing the spotlight on the wider return of the fashion accessory red carpets.

Tara Sutaria is clearly in her old-Hollywood era in Cannes, and honestly, we are not complaining.

For her second appearance, attending the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the actor leaned fully into dramatic opera-glove dressing with a sleek all-black ensemble. Continuing her vintage charm streak, the actor wore a sculpted black look by Rhea Costa,a Romania based brand, that exuded timeless femme-fatale energy.

The outfit featured a corset-style fitted bodice with elegant off-shoulder draping that wrapped beautifully around the neckline, adding just the right amount of drama.

She paired it with a sleek midi skirt from the same label featuring refined side pleats and a clean, streamlined silhouette. But what really stood out were the gloves, which added that extra touch of vintage theatre.

There’s something about opera gloves that instantly elevates an outfit. They add a touch of vintage drama, elegance, and that unmistakable main-character energy. Once reserved for vintage evening wear, they’ve now slowly returned to celebrity fashion moodboards. Hold that thought, more on that later.

Coming back to Sutaria, who will be honoured at the Women in Cinema Gala hosted by the Red Sea Film Festival at Cannes, her makeup adhered to the retro theme. Her soft vintage waves, nude lips, and the perfect nude eyeshadow with bold eyeliner did all the talking.

She completed the look with Jimmy Choo’s pointed black heels, classic Saint Laurent sunglasses, and Chanel’s vintage gold earrings. Against the soft and calming Riviera backdrop, the whole aesthetic felt like a modern reinterpretation of old-Hollywood glamour.

The look struck that sweet spot between classic and contemporary. Sophisticated, a little mysterious, and unapologetically chic, exactly what a femme fatale is supposed to be.

Earlier, her first look also exuded timeless elegance in a monochromatic midi dress by Helsa. She had also started her Cannes journey serving classic 90s supermodel energy in a striped oversized blazer and pants.

And amid all the old-glam, retro vibe, it’s the gloves that instantly transported the look into vintage cinema territory. If anything, these fashion pieces are slowly making their way back into the fashion conversation. Or maybe, they never really left the chat.

The opera glove era

The trend of these sophisticated gloves has become more than just an accessory.

According to Town & Country, stylist Deborah Afshani sees the return of opera gloves as a reflection of people craving “a little refinement” in chaotic times. She believes the accessory changes the way a woman carries herself and adds that wearing them today signals confidence — “This is a woman who’s not apologising.”

And of course, the influence of Victorian-era dramas like Bridgerton cannot be ignored either. The looks speak for themselves.

Recently, Radhika Merchant delivered a striking couture moment in icy-blue Givenchy for the special dinner the Ambani family hosted to honour the return of the India Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

While the look carried echoes of the vintage couture silhouettes Audrey Hepburn once made iconic in Breakfast at Tiffany's, it was her pair of opera gloves that accentuated the Victorian-era-inspired poise.

Speaking of trends, the Met Gala red carpet cannot be missed. It literally sets the fashion tone for the year — what’s hot and what’s not. And for opera gloves, there were a few graceful sightings.

Katy Perry wore a custom white Stella McCartney gown and paired it with matching opera gloves. Even The American Horror Story actor Sarah Paulson opted for white gloves to go with her dress.

As for Indian celebs, Bhumi Pednekar, Taapsee Pannu, Janhvi Kapoor and several others have also often brought a certain kind of grace with these gloves. Fun fact: Kangana Ranaut draped a corset and Kanjeevaram saree along with purple opera gloves for her Cannes debut in 2019.
