The FIFA fever is on, and so is the enthusiasm to find a match in the modern dating world. According to a new survey by dating app happn, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is getting the ball rolling in the dating scene too.

Can you imagine a football match becoming the new meet-cute? Turns out, urban Indians are up for it.

As per happn's survey, 93 per cent of singles do not outrightly turn down an invitation to a 3 am World Cup date. In fact, many seem willing to swap a good night's sleep for good company. "Around 32 per cent would say yes immediately, and another 34 per cent would say yes depending on the person," the data reveals.

If you're thinking about how competitive things get when sports are on the screen, interestingly enough, team rivalries are becoming the latest conversation starters, cues for flirty banter and bonding moments.

But who exactly is worth staying awake till 3 a.m. for? For many, the answer goes beyond a long-term partner, spouse or close friend. It could be a crush, or even someone they've just matched with on a dating app. After all, choosing to stay up into the early hours for someone is practically a love language in itself.

While 47 per cent of respondents say they would stay up for a FIFA match with a long-term partner, 44 per cent say they would do the same for a new crush. It seems butterflies can be just as compelling as commitment when it comes to football.

Rival teams? That's hot

More than eight in ten respondents say that if their crush supports a rival team, it either makes things more interesting or does not bother them at all. In fact, 53 per cent treat a rivalry as a spark, not a setback.

The survey, which draws responses from around 3,800 urban Indian happn users aged between 18 and 35, reveals that football fans are often seen as green flags because of their passion (not the toxic kind). And the most attractive trait? Not hardcore fandom, but simply a genuine interest in the game.

The set-up

Traditionally, football fandom has been associated with packed sports bars, noisy watch parties and groups of friends cheering their lungs out over pints of beer. So, where does romance fit into all of this?

For many singles, the ideal match-night setup is a cosy setup indoors. About 40 per cent prefer watching the game together on the couch or turning it into a themed night with pizza, snacks and drinks.

So yes, sports and romance can absolutely go hand in hand. In fact, they've always had a way of bringing people closer. Remember how cricket became the backdrop for love in Mr and Mrs Maahi?

Because at the end of the day, it's all about experiencing something together and finding an excuse to spend a few extra hours in each other's company. And let's be honest, there's something inherently special about staying up till sunrise with someone you like.
