Q. Donning the khakee or solving crimes on OTT is like a rite of passage now for actresses. What made Rita Brown compelling?
She is not just a cop—she is a broken woman who doesn’t want to do anything. Apart from being a psychological thriller and murder mystery, it is a gritty show about a woman who is down and out and how she overcomes that and leads an investigation to nab a serial killer.
Q. In the 1990s and early 2000s, you didn’t have time to breathe. But you haven’t done as much after embracing motherhood. How do you decide what’s worth your while?
I started work at 16. I have done four shifts in a day. It was fun times. I have been lucky enough to have had a great body of work. I have always worked from my heart. I say no to a lot of things.
It is my own race, my own pace and own lane.
Q. The industry has evolved. What do you miss and not miss?
In the 1990s, it was maybe five women on set. Now, there are so many women directors and screenwriters and technicians. Things are streamlined now. We get bound scripts and interact with co-stars before going on set. Earlier, films were made on passion and gut instinct. We just did it. I enjoy today as well, but I miss the era of a little bit of unpredictability.
Q. Brown sees you work with the great Helen. Both of you knew how to shake a leg.
As a child, I heard stories of Helen aunty from my mother. She would tell me how every actress would struggle to dance and Helenji would look at the choreographer and just do the step. She had this muscle memory. I remember thinking it’s a skill I have to learn. At her age to be so active and interested is amazing.
