Diplomacy by design | Inside Swedish Consul General Sven Östberg's Mumbai residence
We step inside the Swedish Consul General's minimalist Mumbai sanctuary, an epitome of understated elegance

Beyond the humid clamour of Mumbai’s coastline, the residence of Swedish Consul General Sven Ostberg balances Nordic minimalism with the demands of diplomatic life. Moving into the space in August, 2025, Ostberg has curated a home that serves a dual purpose: a sophisticated backdrop for high-level diplomacy and a warm, private sanctuary that keeps his roots alive. The home is a curated dialogue between Stockholm-designed furniture and a serene, bone-white palette, creating a calm refuge from the frantic energy of the city.
A TALE OF TWO QUARTERS
The residence is a thoughtful study in division. While the downstairs area is dedicated to official functions, the upstairs remains a deeply personal retreat. “The downstairs, the official part, was already provided furnished,” stberg explains. “But on the upstairs, that’s our private part, we use our own furniture that we’ve brought from back home.” This private level houses a cosy library, a small kitchenette and bedrooms, offering the Consul General and his wife a slice of Sweden in the middle of Maharashtra.
CURATED BY STOCKHOLM
In the official wings of the home, every piece of furniture tells a story of heritage and state-sanctioned style. Unlike a typical home where the resident chooses the decor, this space is a gallery of Swedish excellence directed from afar. “We are actually not allowed to do any changes,” says stberg. “The furniture and all the artwork are decided by Stockholm... by the Ministry.”
The rooms are a ‘who’s who’ of Swedish design, featuring iconic sofas from Norell and Svenskt Tenn and chairs from Kƒällemo and Lammhults. The aesthetic is strictly Scandinavian, a sea of muted beiges and whites. However, stberg points out the intentional pops of character: “In a sea of muted colours, we have some islands of colours, statement pieces, for instance, the chairs and sofas in very bright blue shades.”
THE PERFECT BRIDGE
The residence is designed for fluidity, transitioning effortlessly from one-on-one business meetings to grand Nobel receptions. To accommodate the massive crowds that flock to Swedish events, the layout is flexible. “When we have a bigger number of people, we sometimes take away some of the furniture to make space for people to mingle,” shares Ostberg.
A favourite feature for guests is the expansive terrace. “It’s very popular, especially among Swedes; they like to be outside on the terrace. Indians tend to be inside,” he notes with a smile. Whether it’s hosting a seated dinner for foreign diplomats or a festive Christmas choir of Indian children singing Swedish carols, the home is a bridge between two cultures.
SWEDISH HEART, INDIAN SOUL
Living in India has left a permanent mark on the Consul General, both in his wardrobe and his worldview. While his home is filled with Swedish timber and textiles, his closet tells a different story. “I’m always very keen on Indian clothes,” he admits. “I usually wear kurta pajama to work and also in my spare time.”
Beyond the fashion and a newfound love for spicy pav bhaji, India has gifted him a change in pace. “I think when you live here for a while, you get more patience,” he reflects. “You become more attuned to life being unplannable and follow the flow more than you can in a country like Sweden, where everything is very tightly planned.”
As Sweden continues to expand its footprint in India, from IKEA’s rapid growth to AI sports ventures, this residence remains the ultimate symbol of that partnership. A space that is understated in design, yet overflowing with the warmth of Indo-Swedish hospitality.
