Architecture | The art of clarity
Thoughtful design meets collaborative synergy in this expansive 8,000 sq ft Mumbai duplex that balances grand scale with soulful intimacy

As architects, we viewed this 8,000 sq ft duplex in Worli, Mumbai, not just as a project, but as a creative playground where we could explore the intersection of scale and intimacy. Our vision was to craft a residence that speaks with a quiet clarity of purpose. A space where every room is intentionally shaped with both freedom and focus. Through a collaborative synergy with the homeowners, what began as a structural challenge evolved into a deeply personal narrative, gracefully balancing expansive volumes with the soulful touch of a private sanctuary.

A TALE OF TWO LEVELS
The home is intelligently bifurcated to manage its vast footprint. The lower floor, grounded in fresh Baroda green stone, is designed as the social heart, a space for communal gatherings and high-end entertaining. As one ascends the staircase, a stunning connector featuring metal and cane detailing by Wicker Story, the mood shifts. Warm wooden flooring takes over the upper level, signalling a transition into the private realm of bedrooms and family dens.
ENTERTAINING WITH CHARACTER
The formal living area sets a refined tone near the entrance, anchored by a generous L-shaped sofa from Studio Nor11 and a Masiero Nappe c10 chandelier. However, it is the informal living area that captures the home’s playful spirit. Here, a sculptural custom swing takes centre stage, flanked by a bespoke brass bar that glows with metallic detailing extending to the ceiling. Even the utility is elevated; a totem-like column conceals technical necessities while acting as a piece of vertical art.
SAY A PRAYER
A sliding door reveals a meditative temple, where river stones reminiscent of Rishikesh float within a custom metalwork frame. This serenity is juxtaposed against the bold guest bedroom, which embraces a monochromatic blue-out aesthetic. In a touching nod to heritage, the curtains depict the family’s ancestral village, proving that modern design can still hold a mirror to one’s roots.
CULINARY CONVERSATIONS
A glass brick wall acts as a luminous veil between the lounge and the dining room. In the lounge, the iconic B&B Italia Camaleonda sofa invites lounging, while the dining area is defined by a custom brass table and Flos Skynest pendant lights. The attention to detail extends to the powder rooms; one features a sculpted step basin, while another opts for matte black surfaces and graphic pegboard walls.
WHIMSY AND FUNCTION UPSTAIRS
The children’s wing is a testament to individuality. One room, inspired by a future pilot, features cloud-printed curtains and terracotta accents, while his brother’s room uses ombr greens and a custom medal-display. The upper-level den is the ultimate transformer, acoustic panels and modular furniture, which allow it to pivot from a poker room (with a hidden cabinet table) to a mirrored dance studio in seconds.
DETAILS IN THE EVERYDAY
Perhaps the most striking conversation starter is found in the lift lobby. A name board, meticulously crafted from over 16,000 modular switches, turns a mundane electrical component into a graphic work of art. From the 18th-century charm of Cole & Son wallpapers to the modern silhouettes of Jaipur Rugs, this Worli duplex proves that when function, emotion and intention converge, a house truly becomes a home.
For us, this project was an exercise in play and pause, a journey to prove that a home of this magnitude can still feel intensely personal. By weaving together handcrafted elements, bold material shifts and a clear architectural intent, we have created more than just a duplex; it’s a living, breathing environment where architecture and personal narrative exist in perfect harmony.
