Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has shared a fresh update on the much-awaited sequel to 3 Idiots, offering more insight into the story's timeline and where its beloved characters are headed next. Earlier, India Today had reported that the sequel would be set nearly 20 years after the events of the 2009 blockbuster.
Speaking to Variety India, Hirani confirmed that the project is still in the early stages of development. While Aamir Khan has heard and liked the initial idea, the script is far from complete.
"To be honest, at this moment I am still working on the initial script. It's a very early draft. Aamir has heard and liked it, but we still have to work on it. Abhijat Joshi and I are literally locked up outside Mumbai trying to write it. We should be in a better position to know when we're starting it in the next two months," Hirani said.
The director also revealed that the sequel will revisit the lives of Rancho, Farhan and Raju long after their college days.
"It's all the same characters. It's like a time leap — what are they doing now? It's 3 Idiots 20 years later. These characters have grown older. They're not in college anymore; they're in their professions, married, with kids, and now we see what happens in their lives," he explained.
Hirani also dismissed speculation that the sequel would introduce a "fourth idiot". Addressing rumours about the film being titled 4 Idiots, he told India Today earlier, "I also got to know that it's being called 4 Idiots. I haven't named it that. Honestly, there's no fourth idiot. It's 3 Idiots only, set 20 years later."
The sequel has remained a topic of discussion ever since reports of a continuation surfaced. Earlier, Aamir Khan had confirmed that Hirani had pitched an idea to him and that the team was excited about revisiting the iconic characters. However, he stressed that the film would only move forward if they found a story strong enough to justify returning to the world of 3 Idiots.
