Aamir Khan reveals why PK's second half was changed.

Actor Aamir Khan revealed the second half of PK (2014) was changed shortly before the film’s release. In a recent interview, he said that although the film went on to become a major box-office success, he and director Rajkumar Hirani were not fully satisfied with the final version that reached audiences.

Speaking to Variety India, Aamir said Hirani had originally written a different script, and the latter half of the film was not the same as what viewers eventually saw. According to him, the team decided to rework that portion after noticing a thematic overlap with OMG- Oh My God (2012), even though PK had a very different plot built around an alien character.

Why the second half was changed

Recalling the changes, Khan said, “In case of PK, which was a huge success, both Raju and I were not really fully happy with the film. Because originally, he had written a different script. And the second half was slightly different from what we had made. But there was another film that came out just before us called OMG - Oh My God and the themes were kind of similar.”

He said Hirani was firm that the film’s later portions had to be rewritten. “The plot was totally different, because here there is an alien, and it’s all totally different, but some of the themes were similar. Raju was very adamant that we must change our second half, and we did, and the film was also a success,” Khan said.

Khan added that he and Hirani had spoken about their concerns before the film’s release. “But before the release, Raju and I discussed how we were not totally happy with the film, but how this was the best we could have done. Luckily, the film worked, and it was a big success,” he said.

A broader reflection on scripts

Khan’s comments on PK come as he has also been speaking about how much he values the script while choosing films. In recent remarks about Thugs of Hindostan (2018), he said he usually puts the story first when deciding on a project, and added that repeated changes to that film’s script affected the version that was finally released.

About the film

Released in 2014, PK starred Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma and became a commercial success. The film also sparked discussion for its satirical take on religion and blind faith. Its cast included Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt.

Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par (2025) alongside Genelia Deshmukh. He also produced Ek Din (2026), a romantic film starring his son Junaid and Sai Pallavi.
