Akshay Kumar's Rs 1 crore donation transforms a school in Kashmir border area

Akshay Kumar's Rs 1 crore donation has funded a new education block at Government Middle School Nero Tulail in a remote border village of Kashmir.

Government Middle School Nero Tulail in the remote border area of Gurez Valley in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir, has seen a major change after actor Akshay Kumar donated Rs 1 crore for the school in 2021. The contribution has been used to build a new school block, improving the institution’s infrastructure for local children.

The new building has been named the Shri Hari Om Bhatia Education Block in memory of Kumar’s father. It now has classrooms, a computer laboratory, a library and office space for teachers, while students are also getting the benefit of the government’s Midday Meal Scheme in a cleaner and improved setting.

According to locals, Kumar visited the area in 2021 on the invitation of the Border Security Force to meet jawans posted in the frontier region. During his visit to the village in Tulail, along the Line of Control in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, he interacted with schoolchildren and announced the donation after seeing their educational needs.

During the visit, Kumar also met BSF personnel, posed for photographs with them and danced with them. He paid tribute to soldiers who died in the line of duty by laying a wreath at the war memorial. In a social media post after the visit, he said spending time with the BSF personnel guarding the border had been a memorable and humbling experience.

With the new building now complete, students are studying in a better academic environment. Residents and schoolchildren said the facilities have improved the schooling experience and have helped strengthen educational prospects for children living in the far-flung border village.
