Dia Mirza says son schooled coconut vendor on plastic use, sparks 'privilege' debate
Dia Mirza recounted how her son Avyaan asked a coconut delivery worker to remove plastic packaging and take it back. The clip went viral and drew criticism online, with users calling the exchange entitled and insensitive.

Actor Dia Mirza has once again come under fire after a clip from Soha Ali Khan's podcast went viral, with social media users criticising an anecdote she shared about her son, Avyaan, and a coconut water delivery worker. Many online described the exchange as 'entitled' and 'insensitive', even as the actor presented it as a lesson in environmental awareness.
In the clip, Dia spoke about her dislike for coconut water being delivered in plastic bags with plastic straws. Recalling one such incident, she said the delivery worker arrived at her home with the packaging, unaware of her family's stance on single-use plastic.
According to Dia, Avyaan answered the door and told the delivery worker, "Brother, you have brought this in plastic. Plastic is not allowed in our home. Take it out of the plastic, put it down, and take the plastic and straw back with you."

Reacting to the story, Soha Ali Khan praised the child for confidently speaking to an adult. "Imagine standing up to somebody who is an adult and having that conviction," she said.
However, the clip received a very different response online.
One social media user wrote, "Imagine talking so rudely and with such entitlement to someone who is literally providing you a service in 40-degree heat. The entitlement is unreal. If you do not want plastic, go to the roadside stall and buy it yourself."
Another commented, "A child scolds a poor coconut vendor trying to make ends meet, while adults celebrate it as standing up to a grown-up. This is what insulated privilege looks like." A third user wrote, "Entitled Dia Mirza talking nonsense and another privileged female agreeing along."

The 44-year-old was earlier slammed online for her "patriarchy causes climate change" remarks. In an Instagram video, the environmental advocate responded to the criticism, saying her comments were misunderstood and that she stands by them.
Dia married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021, and the couple welcomed Avyaan later that year. The actor has not responded to the criticism at the time of writing.
