Imtiaz Ali 'hairaan' as Main Vaapas Aaunga doubles box office on 2nd Friday
Imtiaz Ali said he was surprised and overwhelmed after Main Vaapas Aaunga nearly doubled its opening Friday collections on its second Friday. The filmmaker credited strong word of mouth and audience support for the film's unexpected box-office turnaround.

Main Vaapas Aaunga filmmaker Imtiaz Ali said he was surprised after the romantic drama nearly doubled its opening Friday collections on its second Friday. The film, which had a slow start at the box office, has witnessed a remarkable turnaround driven by positive word of mouth, prompting theatres to add more shows amid growing audience demand.
The filmmaker visited cinema halls screening Main Vaapas Aaunga on Friday and interacted with audiences, who were thrilled to see him in person. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the visit, Imtiaz reflected on the film's unexpected box-office resurgence.
“Pehle jis din Friday ko film release hui thi, aur aaj ek hafte baad phir Friday hai, toh collection pehle Friday se shayad double hai. To yeh sab janta ki wajah se hi hua hai, word of mouth ki wajah se hi hua hai (On the day the film was released last Friday, and now a week later on Friday again, the collections are almost double compared to the opening Friday. This has all happened because of the audience, due to strong word of mouth)," he said.
"Overwhelming feeling hai, bahut khushi ki baat hai, thoda hairaan bhi hoon, bahut khushi ho rahi hai aur main janta ka bahut aabhar vyakt karta hoon (It is an overwhelming feeling, a matter of great joy, and I am also a bit surprised. I am very happy, and I express my heartfelt gratitude to the audience),” the filmmaker added.
Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari, Main Vaapas Aaunga had a modest start at the box office after its release on June 12. The film opened to Rs 1.15 crore nett and collected Rs 5.50 crore nett during its opening weekend. However, it began showing signs of recovery from Monday onwards, maintaining steady collections through the weekdays.
The biggest boost came on its second Friday when the film earned Rs 4.30 crore nett, registering an impressive 130 percent jump over its opening Friday collections. The strong performance has prompted theatres and cinema chains across India to add more shows to meet audience demand.
Notably, Main Vaapas Aaunga has managed to sustain and grow its momentum despite facing competition from the newly released Cocktail 2. With positive word of mouth continuing to drive footfalls, the film now appears set for a strong second weekend at the box office.
