Javed Akhtar hits back at troll over Islamophobic comment, calls himself an atheist
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar hit back at a troll over an Islamophobic comment. The user had responded to Akhtar's social media post criticising Donald Trump's remarks on Giorgia Meloni.

Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar responded sharply to a troll over his Islamophobic remarks, reminding everyone that he is an atheist. The conversation escalated after Akhtar criticised United States President Donald Trump over his claim involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The 81-year-old replied to an X comment, questioning him over his faith and "community." Akhtar wrote, "My qaum (community) are all Indians. Including you (sic)." The exchange followed Akhtar’s post on US President Donald Trump and his claim involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Akhtar, who frequently uses his X account to share his views on a range of issues, had criticised Trump in a post on Saturday. His remarks were about Trump’s claim that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo opportunity, a statement Akhtar dismissed in strong terms.
While criticising the US President, Akhtar said that Trump, who is well-known for lying constantly, had simply added another falsehood to his "never-ending list of lies."
He questioned why a confident, high-profile, and empowered woman like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni would ever beg for a photo opportunity with "the most unpopular man in the world." Akhtar highlighted Italy's rich legacy, noting that the great country had taught so much "culture, art, architecture, and good cinema" to America. He concluded that even if such an event had occurred, only a "cheap, indecent, uncouth man" would ever brag about it during a press conference.
After that, a troll posted a couplet, saying in effect that they had a verse for "the lies of your community (sic)" too, adding, "We know the reality of the houris (heavenly maiden) of paradise, this idea too is good for soothing the heart (sic)."
Akhtar then responded to the comment by reiterating that he does not identify with any religion. He wrote, “If your small petty and underdeveloped mind could grasp. A well known fact that I am an Athiest (may be your not familiar with is word it means one who doesn’t believe in any religion,) (sic)."
Apart from his strong opinions on world issues, Akhtar still remains active in Hindi films. His lyrics from the 1997 war film, Border, were reused in Border 2 (2026), featuring actors Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Mona Singh, Medha Rana, Sonam Bajwa and Anya Singh in key roles.
The veteran has also contributed to the lyrics of Sunny Deol's upcoming film, Batwara1947 (2026).
