Kangana Ranaut says she has nothing against Diljit Dosanjh: We've never met

Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut said her clash with actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh was only over differing views and not personal. Her remarks revisit their 2020 farmers' protests row as their respective new films open on the same day.

Kangana Ranaut has clarified that there is no personal feud between her and actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, years after their public clash during the farmers' protests. She said their disagreement was about contradictory views and not personal hostility.

Her remarks came as her co-produced film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata and Diljit Dosanjh's Main Vaapas Aaunga were both released on June 12. Kangana also said the two have never met.

In an interview with NDTV, Kangana said, "We are not against each other. We just had contradictory opinions about a certain event." She added, "I've got nothing against that guy. We've never even met in life."

Asked if she could meet Diljit in future, Kangana said she saw no reason why that could not happen. When asked whether she would send him a message if she liked his work in Main Vaapas Aaunga, she laughed and said, "That's too much, na?"

How the clash began

The fallout between the two began in December 2020 during the nationwide farmers' protests against the government's new farm laws. Kangana had shared a photograph of an elderly woman at a protest site and wrongly identified her as one of the women seen during the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA protests.

She also claimed that the woman could be hired for 100 to join protests. The remark triggered anger on social media. Diljit was among those who challenged the claim. He shared a BBC interview to show that the woman was Mahinder Kaur, a farmer from Punjab.

The disagreement soon became a heated exchange on X. During the back-and-forth, Kangana called Diljit a "bootlicker" and "Karan Johar's pet". Diljit responded by rejecting the remarks and defending the honour and dignity of the women taking part in the protests.

Kangana's comments also come after she criticised Diljit's collaboration with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3. In an interview with Times Now, she said, "Some genuinely have their own agenda" and called for a shared sentiment of nation-building. She later referred to Diljit by name and questioned why he appeared to be following "his own path".

Sardaar Ji 3, starring Diljit and Hania Aamir, was released overseas but not in India because of the government ban on Pakistani artists. The release drew controversy after the Pahalgam terror attack. Diljit said he had no control over the timing of the release because the film had been completed before the attack.

Directed by Manoj Tapadia and co-produced by Kangana, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata is set during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The film follows doctors, nurses and hospital staff inside Mumbai's Cama Hospital after armed attackers entered the building, instead of focusing on the security forces or the attackers.

Diljit Dosanjh's Main Vaapas Aaunga, on the other hand, follows a 95-year-old man who suffers a stroke while trying to rush to Pakistan. As he drifts in and out of recollection, his grandson pieces together fragments from a pre-Partition past, even as the old man struggles to find peace in his final days. The film also stars Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah.
