Actor Ranvir Shorey has added his voice to the ongoing debate around comedy and online outrage. He has indirectly backed comedian Pranit More, who is currently facing criticism over a recent incident from one of his live shows.

On Thursday, Shorey strongly defended comedy on X and urged people to stop overreacting to jokes. Without directly naming Pranit More, his post came at a time when the comedian has been facing significant backlash online.

“STOP OUTRAGING OVER COMEDY, INDIA! A SOCIETY THAT DISRESPECTS COMEDY AND COMEDIANS SLOWLY LOSES THE ABILITY TO INTROSPECT. JAI COMEDY (sic)!," he wrote.

His post quickly sparked discussion on social media, with users divided over whether comedy should have fewer boundaries or whether certain remarks deserve public criticism.

When a user commented that there is a “thin line between humour and passive aggression,” Shorey responded sharply, writing, “No, online outrage over jokes and comedy has become a platform for attention seekers and seethers! Many of them anonymous. Regular folks just trying to have a good laugh are being targeted for nothing (sic)!"

While Shorey’s comments were widely interpreted as support for Pranit More, several public figures including Rashami Desai, Ayesha Khan, Malti Chahar and Kusha Kapila have expressed disappointment over the incident and the tone of the conversation that followed.

The controversy stems from a clip that went viral from Pranit More’s performance, where audience member Himanshu Jangra spoke about going on a date, spending around Rs 370 on biryani, and later suggesting that spending money on a meal entitled him to intimacy. The remarks triggered widespread backlash on social media, with many users calling the mindset inappropriate and reducing relationships to a transaction.
