As Amazon MGM Studios officially begins its search for the next James Bond, one familiar name has ruled himself out of the race. Actor and DJ Idris Elba has addressed fresh speculation around the iconic spy franchise, saying the makers are now looking for a younger actor to step into the role of 007.

The actor, whose name has repeatedly surfaced in fan discussions over the years, clarified that he is not being considered for the part. Speaking to People Magazine at the Los Angeles premiere of Masters of the Universe, Elba dismissed the latest reports linking him to Bond.

“My name's not getting thrown out, no way. They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can't wait – it's going to be amazing,” he said.

Elba further added that he had never actually been in contention for the role and described the long-running speculation as fan-driven chatter rather than anything official.

“I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place,” he said.

This is not the first time the actor has spoken about the rumours surrounding the franchise. In 2023, Elba reflected on the cultural weight attached to playing Bond and acknowledged why the role continues to spark conversation around actors linked to it.

“We’re all actors, and we understand that that role is one of those sort of coveted types. It’s like being named Sexiest Man Alive. But being asked to be James Bond was like, ‘Okay, you’ve sort of reached the pinnacle’,” he had said.

Created by Ian Fleming, James Bond has remained one of cinema’s most enduring fictional characters since the first film adaptation in 1962. Over the decades, the British spy has been portrayed by actors including Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. David Niven also played Bond in an unofficial adaptation.

Craig last appeared as 007 in No Time to Die, which released in 2021.

Earlier this month, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that auditions for the next Bond were underway. In a statement, the studio said, “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don't plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we're excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

Speculation around the next Bond has intensified in recent months, with actors like Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among the names linked to the role. However, the studio has not officially confirmed any contenders so far.
