More than a year after he quietly stopped using his father’s surname in professional credits, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's eldest son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, has filed to legally remove “Pitt” from his name. According to court documents obtained by E! News, the 24-year-old has asked for his name to be changed from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie.

Maddox had already begun using his mother’s surname professionally. He was credited as Maddox Jolie while working as an assistant director on Couture, a film headlined by Jolie. The same name also appeared in production notes distributed during the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.

Maddox is the eldest of the six children shared by Jolie and Pitt, who separated in 2016. The former couple are also parents to Pax Jolie-Pitt, Zahara Jolie, Shiloh Jolie, and twins Knox Jolie and Vivienne Jolie.

Maddox is not the first of Jolie, 50, and Pitt, 62, to move away from his father’s surname. In 2023, Zahara Jolie introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie while joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Spelman College. She was also referred to by the same name earlier this month during her graduation ceremony.

Vivienne Jolie was similarly credited as Vivienne Jolie in the 2024 Playbill for The Outsiders, a production she worked on with her mother.

Before Maddox’s latest reported legal filing, Shiloh Jolie had made the most significant formal change. Born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, she filed a petition on her 18th birthday in May 2024 to legally remove “Pitt” from her surname and take the name Shiloh Jolie. According to E! News, the request was approved in August that year.
