Actor Daisy Edgar-Jones steps into the world of Jane Austen in the first trailer for the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which introduces the Dashwood sisters, their family’s changing fortunes and the men who enter their lives.

The trailer of director Georgia Oakley's upcoming film opens with Marianne, played by actor Esm Creed-Miles, running her hand through grass, giving the film a rustic feel that recalls 2005’s Pride & Prejudice. It quickly establishes Marianne’s close bond with her sister Elinor, played by Edgar-Jones, and the family’s difficult circumstances after their late father’s inheritance passes them by because of their step-brother.

The cast also includes actor Caitrona Balfe as Mrs Dashwood and actor Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest sister, Margaret. Actor Fiona Shaw appears as Mrs Jennings, who is intent on helping the girls find matches.

Actor George MacKay plays Edward Ferrars in the adaptation. In one scene, Elinor and Marianne peer out of a window to see whether he is handsome before he introduces himself in a Regency-era greatcoat. Soon after, the usually cautious Elinor admits, “I greatly esteem him.”

Actor Frank Dillane appears as Mr Willoughby, who rescues Marianne after she falls. Mrs Dashwood says he has saved her life, but he replies, “Not her life, good madam, merely an ankle.”

Norwegian actor Herbert Nordrum completes the main cast as the older and quieter Colonel Brandon, who is drawn to Marianne and her spirit. The trailer also hints at a confrontation between Brandon and Willoughby, with Brandon saying, “Come with me,” before grabbing Willoughby by the lapels and shouting, “Now!”

Edgar Jones, who plays the protagonist in the upcoming classic adaptation, had earlier featured in the romantic drama limited series, Normal People (2020), based on the 2018 novel of the same name.

The 28-year-old also featured in the 2024 disaster film Twisters, featuring actors Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane.

Jane Austen’s classic romance, Sense and Sensibility, has seen several screen adaptations, none more acclaimed than the 1995 film directed by Ang Lee. That Oscar-winning version featured actor Emma Thompson alongside actor Kate Winslet, who starred in the drama just before her breakout role in Titanic. In addition to starring, Thompson penned the film's script, earning her second Academy Award for the screenplay.

Oakley's Sense and Sensibility will release theatrically on October 16. The film is co-produced by Focus Features, Working Title Films, November Pictures and Kiddo Films.
