The Shiv Sena has had a history of practising the politics of thokshahi, of physical violence against its critics. This normalisation of a lumpen and violent political culture has now seen a corporator brazenly assaulting doctors and nurses. Arresting Ramesh Mhatre under public pressure is not enough. At the very least, he must be suspended from the party pending investigation.
Ironically, Dr. Shrikant Shinde, the Shiv Sena MP from the area, is a qualified doctor. The question is what matters more to the young MP, the support of a loyal corporator who has to be protected or the rule of law? Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis holds the home portfolio in Maharashtra. Will he act against his ally and draw a red line? Doctors have been on the receiving end from this kind of gundagardi for way too long. As I said earlier, enough is enough.
