Donald Trump has a deserved reputation of being a big bully, a man-child who believes he can get away with bad behaviour or set his own rules, which is why it came as no surprise that he pushed FIFA to rescind the red card given to a US player during the ongoing World Cup football.

What did come as a surprise was FIFA's abject capitulation.

The body which runs the world's most widely played sport has not, for the first time, shown itself to lack moral courage and stand up for the sports ethos.

Yet despite Trump getting the rules bent, the good news was that Belgium thumped the US four-one.

Sports, my friends, is a great leveler. Trump may have tried to play big boss, but on the sports field, what matters is who scores the goals, not who has more superpower leverage. Trump won't change. Hopefully, FIFA will.
