A political crisis is unfolding in West Bengal as over seventy of the TMC's eighty newly elected legislators skipped a protest rally and meeting convened by party supremo Mamata Banerjee. Reports indicate approximately fifty rebel lawmakers held a private meeting to support an expelled leader as their representative in the state assembly. Meanwhile, there are reports that in Bengal more than fifty TMC MLAs are exploring the possibility of declaring themselves to be the 'asli' TMC or the 'real' TMC, and hence taking claim to nominate Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay as the leader of opposition in the assembly. The TMC leadership alleged that the BJP is orchestrating a split through intimidation, while the saffron party attributed it to an internal rift and dissatisfaction with the party's corporate functioning.
