After days of humid and unsettled weather, Delhi-NCR is set to receive a spell of rain and thunderstorms, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an Orange Alert for several parts of the national capital on Thursday.

According to the IMD's latest district-level nowcast, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, is likely over parts of South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi during the next few hours.

The weather office has advised residents to remain prepared as strong winds could lead to the uprooting of weak trees, minor damage to temporary structures and traffic disruptions in some areas.

The Orange Alert indicates that people should be ready for rapidly changing weather conditions and exercise caution while travelling.

In addition, another spell of light rain with thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by winds of 30-40 kmph is expected to affect most parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

The active weather is not expected to remain confined to Delhi. The IMD has forecast similar conditions over neighbouring regions during the next two hours. In Haryana, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Sohna and Narnaul are likely to witness light rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In western Uttar Pradesh, Nandgaon and Barsana are also expected to receive rain and lightning.

Meanwhile, several districts in Rajasthan, including Tizara, Khairthal, Kotputli, Alwar, Viratnagar, Nagar, Deeg, Laxmangarh, Rajgarh, Nadbai, Bharatpur, Mahawa, Mahandipur Balaji and Bayana, are likely to experience similar weather conditions with gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph.

The fresh spell of rain comes as the southwest monsoon continues its gradual advance across northern India, increasing moisture availability over the region. The interaction of moist monsoon winds with local weather systems is expected to trigger thunderstorms across Delhi-NCR and adjoining states.

Meteorologists advise residents to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees, stay away from electric poles during thunderstorms and secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

Motorists have also been urged to drive cautiously as sudden spells of rain could reduce visibility and lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.

With thunderstorms likely through the day, Delhiites can expect a welcome dip in temperatures and some relief from the sultry conditions.
