Why did Delhi-NCR witness such heavy rainfall? The science behind it

Heavy rain lashed Delhi and its adjoining regions, including Noida and Gurugram, on Friday after a low-pressure system formed over western Uttar Pradesh. The spell brought relief from humidity but caused waterlogging, slow traffic and visibility concerns.

Heavy rain lashed Delhi and its adjoining areas of Noida and Gurugram in the NCR on Friday, submerging roads, triggering widespread waterlogging and bringing traffic to a crawl across the national capital. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue through the day before gradually easing from Saturday, with light showers expected over the next two days.

LOW-PRESSURE SYSTEM TRIGGERED RAINFALL

Meteorologists said the intense rainfall over Delhi and adjoining regions was triggered by a well-marked low-pressure system (LPS) that has developed over western Uttar Pradesh.

The weather system fuelled widespread thunderstorms across the National Capital Region (NCR), bringing much-needed relief from humid conditions while causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas.

MONSOON TROUGH STRENGTHENS RAINFALL OVER DELHI

The rainfall is being further strengthened by the prevailing monsoon circulation over northern India. The monsoon trough, the primary rain-bearing axis of the southwest monsoon, currently stretches across northwest India before extending eastwards towards the Bay of Bengal, creating favourable conditions for the formation and intensification of rain-bearing clouds.

According to the IMD, Safdarjung, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded 59.2 mm of rainfall till 8.30 am on Friday. Lodhi Road received 60.4 mm, Ridge recorded 57 mm, Ayanagar logged 26.2 mm and Palam measured 16.9 mm during the same period.

RAIN LIKELY TO EASE FROM SATURDAY

Delhi-NCR may continue to receive intermittent spells of rain through Friday as trailing cloud bands associated with the low-pressure system pass over the region. However, meteorologists expect the heaviest rainfall to gradually shift towards Rajasthan as the weather system advances.
