Over 20,000 dead in France: 2026 heatwave one of the deadliest climate crises
New figures emerging from Europe reveal the scale of a climate disaster that unfolded over just a few weeks, painting a far more sobering picture than early estimates suggested.

Health officials stressed that these are "excess deaths", a measure used to estimate the total impact of an event by comparing the number of deaths during a specific period with historical averages.
While not every death was directly caused by heatstroke, many were linked to extreme temperatures worsening existing health conditions, such as heart, lung and kidney diseases.
THE HARSHEST IMPACTS

According to the health agency, people aged 75 years and above accounted for nearly two-thirds of the excess deaths.
Furthermore, nearly half of the deaths occurred in hospitals, while others were recorded in nursing homes and private residences.
The Paris region was hit the hardest, registering nearly 2,000 more deaths than expected during the heatwave.
The latest figure is also significantly higher than the preliminary estimate released earlier this month, when authorities had reported around 2,000 excess deaths.
Officials said the updated toll reflects a more complete analysis of mortality data collected after the event.
