A tale of two weathers is unfolding across India as the nation grapples with a stark meteorological divide.

While the life-giving southwest monsoon continues its steady march across the southern peninsula and northeastern states, vast stretches of the north and central regions remain locked in the suffocating grip of an intense heatwave today.

As of Saturday, the monsoon has successfully advanced into parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the northeastern states.

MONSOON BRINGS RAIN AND FLOOD RISKS TODAY

The arrival of the monsoon brings much-needed relief to the parched Earth, yet it carries the inherent peril of excess.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with intensities reaching between seven and 20 centimetres, expected over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the northeast throughout the coming week.

On Sunday, these torrential downpours threaten to trigger localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying urban pockets, and landslides in vulnerable hilly terrains.

Residents and commuters are urged to consult local traffic advisories, as waterlogging frequently disrupts major transit routes.

NORTHERN INDIA FACES PERSISTENT HEATWAVE TODAY

In stark contrast, the atmosphere over Northwest and Central India remains dry and hostile today.

Temperatures are soaring, with maximum readings frequently breaching the 38 to 43 degrees Celsius mark. Heatwave alerts are in place for isolated pockets across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh from June 8 to June 11.

Health authorities recommend stringent hydration, urging the consumption of water even in the absence of thirst, alongside traditional, cooling beverages like lassi or buttermilk to counter the physiological stress of the heat.

Infants, the elderly, and those managing chronic health conditions are advised to avoid prolonged Sun exposure during the hottest hours of this Sunday.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER IN DELHI-NCR BE LIKE TODAY?

For those in Delhi and the National Capital Region, the outlook for today suggests a partly cloudy sky, offering a fleeting reprieve from the relentless Sun.

Temperatures are anticipated to hover between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, with minimums settling between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius.
