Western Disturbance to drench the north even as heat grips central India today

The IMD says a western disturbance will bring rain and thunderstorms to north India on Friday, June 19, while central India swelters under heatwave conditions. The northeast braces for heavy to very heavy rain as the monsoon advances.

Step outside tomorrow morning, and the sky will not look the same everywhere in India. In the north, clouds will be gathering. In the centre, the air will still shimmer with heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says two very different forces are at work at once, the results of which will be reflected in Friday’s weather.

A WESTERN DISTURBANCE STIRS THE NORTH

The first is a western disturbance. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with trouble.

It is simply a weather system that travels in from the west, carrying moisture that turns into rain over the hills and plains of north India.

The IMD expects fairly widespread rain over Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, and isolated to scattered showers over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, often with thunder and lightning.

Over West Rajasthan, watch for thundersqualls, those sudden violent bursts of wind and rain, with gusts of 50 to 60 kmph touching 70 kmph. The cloud cover should keep the northern heat in check.

THE MIDDLE STAYS HOT

Central India is not so lucky. IMD says maximum temperatures there could climb by two to three degrees Celsius, and isolated heatwave conditions may grip pockets of East and West Madhya Pradesh until June 21.

A heatwave is a stretch of unusually high temperatures that can strain the body. Even so, brief showers and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha.

THE EAST AND NORTHEAST GET DRENCHED

The southwest monsoon, the seasonal rain-bearing wind that India waits for each summer, is pushing ahead. IMD forecasts widespread rain over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and the northeast, with heavy to very heavy falls in places.

Jharkhand and Bihar may see isolated thunderstorms and squally winds of 50 to 60 kmph.

Along the coast, in Konkan, Goa and Odisha, expect a sticky, humid day.

IMD advises people in storm-prone areas to stay alert to falling branches and lightning, and to keep an eye on its live updates. So pick your forecast by where you stand. Tomorrow, India will be hot, wet and windy, all at the same time.
