Thunderstorms for Delhi, rain in Bihar, but Monsoon to still struggle on Wednesday

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds across several states on June 17. Yet the southwest monsoon remains subdued over western and central India, limiting relief in deficit-hit areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a mix of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and gusty winds across several parts of the country on June 17, even as the southwest monsoon continues to struggle over large parts of western and central India.

Residents of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab can expect isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Wind speeds are likely to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts touching 60 kmph in some areas. Similar weather conditions are expected over western Uttar Pradesh.

Parts of Rajasthan will remain under a weather alert as thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are likely over both eastern and western districts. Dust storm activity may also continue over western Rajasthan.

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to witness scattered rainfall on June 17. Himachal Pradesh may experience gusty winds of up to 50 kmph, while the higher reaches of the western Himalayas could see localised thunderstorms.

Heavy Rainfall Warning for Bihar and Northeast

In eastern India, Bihar is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on June 17. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely across Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim remain among the wettest regions in the country, with widespread rainfall and the possibility of very heavy rain continuing over the coming days.

The Northeast is also set for another wet day. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are forecast to receive widespread rainfall. Heavy showers are likely over Assam and Meghalaya, where flood-prone areas may witness rising water levels.

Central India, which has been grappling with a significant monsoon deficit, is expected to receive isolated to scattered rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. Thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 60 kmph are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

However, meteorologists say the rainfall may not be sufficient to significantly reduce the existing rainfall deficit across the region.

Despite scattered light rainfall over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Gujarat, monsoon activity remains subdued over western India. Mumbai and much of Maharashtra are still awaiting a major revival in monsoon conditions.

Kerala is expected to remain the wettest part of peninsular India with widespread rainfall continuing across the state. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on June 17, while Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka could see scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
