Skyroot to launch CV Raman, Vikram Sarabhai, Abdul Kalam to space aboard Vikram-I

Skyroot's Vikram-I maiden orbital launch will carry microscopic gold tributes to CV Raman, Vikram Sarabhai and APJ Abdul Kalam. The mission also tests key payloads and onboard systems as Skyroot seeks future commercial certification.

When Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-I rocket lifts off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota later this month, it will carry more than cutting-edge technology to orbit.

Nestled among its demonstration payloads will be microscopic tributes to three of India's greatest scientific visionaries, Sir CV Raman, Dr Vikram Sarabhai, and former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

The historic launch, dubbed Mission Aagaman, is the maiden orbital flight of Skyroot's privately developed Vikram-I rocket. Besides testing the launch vehicle, the mission will carry several technology demonstration payloads from Indian and international companies.

Among the most unique payloads is a Microart created by artist Ajay Kumar Mattewada. Crafted in 18-karat gold, the artwork takes the shape of a miniature rocket carrying microscopic sculptures of Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman, Indian space programme pioneer Dr Vikram Sarabhai, after whom the rocket is named, and former President and aerospace scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Each sculpture is smaller than a grain of rice, making it one of the tiniest artistic tributes ever sent into space.

The artwork will fly alongside Cosmos Diamonds' "Cosmic Bloom", another artistic payload that blends science with creative expression, highlighting the growing role of cultural artefacts in commercial space missions.

VIKRAM-I WILL LAUNCH THESE PAYLOADS TO SPACE

Mission Aagaman will also serve as a showcase for emerging space technologies. Among the payloads is Grahaa Space's SOLARAS S3 satellite, designed as a technology demonstration platform, Cosmoserve Space's "Embrace", an in-orbit robotic arm intended to demonstrate space servicing capabilities, and an orbital technology demonstrator from German space company DCUBED.

Skyroot is also flying its own SCOPE satellite to collect valuable flight data and validate onboard systems.

Unlike a routine commercial launch, Vikram-I's first flight is primarily an engineering demonstration aimed at validating the rocket's performance in actual flight conditions. The data gathered from the mission will help certify the launch vehicle for future commercial operations.

For Skyroot, however, the mission is also symbolic. By sending microscopic sculptures of Raman, Sarabhai and Kalam into orbit, the startup is paying homage to the scientists whose work laid the foundation for India's rise as a global space power.

As India's first privately developed orbital rocket prepares for liftoff, the tiny gold sculptures will serve as a reminder that every giant leap into space is built on the vision of pioneers who first dared to dream beyond the skies.
