India's P. V. Sindhu made a confident start to her Indonesia Open campaign, defeating Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games to advance to the Round of 16 on Tuesday. The former world champion prevailed 25-23, 21-16 in a match that was far more competitive than the final scoreline suggested.

Sindhu looked set for a comfortable opening-game victory after establishing a healthy lead, but a penalty for delaying the restart allowed Busanan a route back into the contest. The Thai shuttler seized the opportunity, clawing back the deficit and turning what appeared to be a routine game into a tense battle.

However, Sindhu showcased her experience when it mattered most. Every time Busanan threatened to wrestle momentum away, the Indian responded with aggressive attacking play and greater consistency. Sindhu eventually regained control to close out the opening game before carrying that momentum into the second, sealing the match in straight games and moving one step closer to a potential rematch against world No. 1 An Se-young.

The South Korean star, who defeated Sindhu in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open last week, is expected to be the Indian's next major hurdle in Jakarta. However, An must first negotiate her opening-round clash against Turkey's Neslihan Arin before any meeting with Sindhu can materialise.

With Tuesday's victory, Sindhu extended her remarkable dominance over Busanan to 21 wins in 22 meetings. The head-to-head record remains one of the most lopsided among top-level women's singles players in world badminton. While Busanan once again pushed Sindhu with her defensive resilience and court coverage, the Indian's superior attacking game ultimately proved decisive in the key moments.

OTHER INDIAN SHUTTLERS IN ACTION

India will have several more players in action as the opening rounds continue in Jakarta. Men's singles star Lakshya Sen, who reached the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open last week, is scheduled to face home favourite and world No. 13 Alwi Farhan later in the day

Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth got knocked out of the tournament in the first round losing to Japan's Yushi Tanaka 19-21, 15-21, on Tuesday, June 2.

In women's singles, rising talents Unnati Hooda and Malvika Bansod will be aiming to make deep runs in the tournament. Malvika faced a tough opening-round challenge against seventh-seeded Thai shuttler Pornpawee Chochuwong, losing 12-21, 10-21.

India's hopes in women's doubles rest solely on the pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. The duo face a difficult first-round assignment against Indonesia's Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari in front of a partisan home crowd.
