India enjoyed an impressive day at the Singapore Open, with Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu, the men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and the mixed doubles duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto all advancing to the quarterfinals.

On Thursday, May 28, Sindhu defeated Japan’s Riko Gunji in straight games, 21-9, 21-12, in the women’s singles Round of 16. The two-time Olympic medallist is also on track to reclaim her place in the world’s Top 10 rankings for the first time since October 2022.

Against Gunji, Sindhu was in complete control from the opening rally. She built early leads in both games and did not allow her opponent to settle or generate any sustained momentum.

The Indian shuttler dominated the first game comfortably and carried the same authority into the second, where Gunji briefly attempted to mount resistance. However, Sindhu’s experience and tactical discipline ensured she remained firmly in control and closed out the match without any real pressure.

Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu had already shown strong form with a straight-games win over Indonesia’s fifth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani, 21-17, 21-18, underlining her consistency and attacking intent.

With this victory, Sindhu moves into the quarterfinals, where she is set for a high-profile clash against South Korea’s An Se Young.

LAKSHYA RIDES HIS LUCK

Lakshya had a stroke of luck in the Singapore Open Super 750 as Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn retired midway through their Round of 16 clash with the Indian leading 2-0 in the opening game. The youngster will next be up against Japan’s Koki Watanabe, who defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-17, 21-12 to set up the contest.

They will now meet Malaysia’s Khai Xing Kang and Tai Aaron in the quarterfinals.
