Iceland Cricket trolls Gambhir after India's historic series loss vs Ireland

India's loss to Ireland triggered anger amongst cricket fans. The Gautam Gambhir-coached team faltered against the European side for the first time in the history of the game.

India’s historic 0-2 T20I series defeat against Ireland triggered criticism of head coach Gautam Gambhir on Monday, June 29, with social media account Iceland Cricket joining the pile-on with a viral post mocking India’s performance.

India, playing their first bilateral assignment after winning the T20 World Cup 2026, arrived in Ireland with a star-studded squad but failed to win either of the two matches in Belfast. The result marked one of India’s most disappointing T20I outcomes against an opposition they had historically dominated.

Known for its tongue-in-cheek posts and sharp cricket humour, Iceland Cricket took aim at Gambhir after the series defeat.

“We can confirm that we don't wish to add Gautam Gambhir to our coaching staff. He clearly has talent, though. To take those Indian players and deliver those results in Ireland takes truly remarkable gifts,” the account posted on X.

The post quickly gained traction online as fans reacted to India’s unexpected defeat.

India’s batting line-up failed to click across both matches despite carrying several established names. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, India struggled to impose themselves and never looked in complete control of the series.

Sanju Samson, who played a starring role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year and was named Player of the Tournament, endured a difficult outing in Ireland and registered low scores in both matches.

The result also renewed scrutiny around team selection after 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remained unused despite arriving into the series in strong form following his record-breaking exploits for India A.

Gambhir, who took charge of India after the World Cup-winning campaign, had defended the management’s approach and backed the team to stay patient with selection calls as a new cycle begins.

India will now shift focus to a significantly tougher challenge against England. The team is scheduled to play a white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs, with questions already emerging over combinations and whether changes will be made following the Ireland setback.
