India Women may have endured another heartbreaking early exit from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, but Harmanpreet Kaur's side still had reason to celebrate after securing qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Despite crashing out following a six-wicket defeat to Australia in their final Group A match, India booked one of the six spots available in cricket's historic return to the Olympics through the ICC's newly announced qualification pathway.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday confirmed the qualification criteria for cricket's return to the Olympic Games after a gap of 128 years, with the men's and women's T20 competitions featuring six teams each at Los Angeles 2028.

India secured qualification as Asia's highest-placed eligible finisher at the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup. Although Harmanpreet's side failed to reach the semifinals, they still finished ahead of the other Asian teams in the tournament, ensuring the continent's lone automatic Olympic berth.

HOW INDIA AND THREE OTHER TEAMS QUALIFIED

The qualification system guarantees one automatic place each for Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania based on the highest-placed eligible finishers at the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup, with each continent capped at one representative.

Australia secured Oceania's berth after another dominant campaign, while South Africa qualified from Africa by progressing to the knockout stage. Great Britain, represented by England in ICC competitions, claimed Europe's place.

As a result, Australia, Great Britain (England), India and South Africa became the first four women's teams to qualify for LA28.

The fifth place could go to hosts USA, provided they break into the top 15 of the ICC Women's T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If the USA fail to meet that requirement, the berth will instead be awarded to the highest-ranked non-qualified team in the ICC Women's T20I rankings as of March 1, 2027.

The sixth and final Olympic spot will be decided through the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. The eight-team event will feature the highest-ranked eligible nations that have not already secured qualification.

The ICC also clarified the situation involving the West Indies. Since the West Indies compete as a combined ICC member rather than an IOC-recognised National Olympic Committee (NOC), they cannot participate as one team at the Olympics. If they are among the highest-ranked non-qualified teams, a separate Caribbean qualifying tournament will determine which nation advances to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

ICC HAILS LANDMARK MOVE

ICC chairman Jay Shah described cricket's Olympic return as a milestone for the sport and said the qualification pathway offers a clear route for member nations.

"Cricket's return to the Olympic Games is a landmark moment for our sport and a powerful opportunity to showcase the very best of cricket to the world. The confirmation of this qualification pathway is an important step towards Los Angeles 2028 and gives Members across the world a clear and exciting route to the Olympic stage," Shah said.

"The Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of multi-event sport, and cricket's inclusion at LA28 will inspire players and fans in every region. This is an historic moment, and one of great opportunity for our Members, as we continue to grow the game and take it to new audiences around the world."

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the qualification model balances competitive standards with global representation while creating an additional pathway through the new Olympics Qualifier.

"This qualification structure has been designed to optimise competitive standards and global representation within the IOC and LA28 participation guidelines. We are leveraging the existing ICC elite competition structure and introducing a new qualification event, which adds an exciting new milestone on the journey to LA28," Gupta said.

Each qualified nation will be allowed to select a 15-member squad. The six teams will be split into two groups of three, with the top two teams contesting the gold-medal match and the third- and fourth-placed teams playing for bronze. All cricket matches at the 2028 Olympic Games will be held at the purpose-built venue in Pomona.
