HOW NORWAY DEFEATED SENEGAL
Norway's dominance in the opening half finally paid off in the 43rd minute after a costly defensive lapse from Senegal. Kalidou Koulibaly failed to clear a loose ball inside the area, allowing Marcus Pedersen to pounce and smash his effort beyond Edouard Mendy to hand the Scandinavians the lead.
The Norwegians threatened to extend their advantage before the interval, creating the clearer openings. Mendy denied them with a pair of impressive saves, while Erling Haaland came agonisingly close when his effort rattled the post just before half-time.
Haaland needed little time to make his mark after the restart. Three minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard threaded a perfectly timed through ball into the striker's path, and the Manchester City forward made no mistake, blasting his finish into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Senegal hit back almost instantly. In the 53rd minute, Sadio Mane carved open the Norwegian defence with a precise pass, and Ismaila Sarr shrugged off his marker before calmly slotting home to reduce the deficit.
Norway restored their two-goal lead five minutes later as Senegal once again failed to deal with the danger. Patrick Berg's cross picked out Haaland, who met it with a stunning first-time volley that cannoned in off the crossbar, taking his World Cup tally to four goals in just two matches.
Sarr grabbed his second goal in stoppage time to set up a nervy finish, but Norway stayed composed to seal all three points and secure one of the first knockout berths from Group I.
The victory also sets the stage for a blockbuster showdown with France on Friday, June 27 (IST), with both teams locked on points and top spot in the group up for grabs.
