The triumph also sees Spain coach Luis de la Fuente enter the record books. At 65, he becomes the oldest manager to win the FIFA World Cup.

For Messi, it is another landmark appearance despite the defeat. The 39-year-old becomes only the second player to feature in three World Cup finals and the oldest outfield player ever to play in the tournament's showpiece match. But on this night, the spotlight belongs to Spain, who reclaim football's biggest prize after an exhausting 120-minute battle.

Lionel Messi, who had retired from international football briefly in 2016, falters with Argentina in the same stadium once again!

This was a difficult watch. Argentina barely played in the World Cup final.

Two forced substitutions due to injury. One red. It completely killed the tempo of the game. They were not able to bring Lionel Messi into the match at all.

They never really showed up for the game.

One more time, Messi plays a short ball again. Rushes to the edge of the box and rips out a shot.

This has been the worst half for Argentina so far. Multiple attacks from Spain which nearly led to multiple goals!

What we are hearing is that, in the build up, Merino stepped on Otamendi.

That is not fair at all.

For the kind of fouls that has not been given today, this seems very very harsh.

Meanwhile, Mikel Merino misses an absolute sitter right in front of the Argentine goal. Perhaps his first miss of the tournament. His header goes wide to the left of Dibu Martinez.
