Venezuela: After 3-day search through rubble, footballer finds dead wife and children
Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo spent three days searching through the rubble of his family home in Venezuela after last week's earthquakes. Authorities later recovered the bodies of his wife and two children.

Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has lost his wife and two children in Venezuela’s devastating earthquakes. The footballer, who searched the rubbles for three days in the hope they had survived, was left devastated when the responders found the bodies of his family.
Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan second-division side Club Sport Martimo La Guaira, had been at a team training camp in Caracas when the earthquakes struck last week. According to CNN Espanol, the 38-year-old travelled immediately to La Guaira, one of the worst-affected areas, after learning about the destruction.
Trejo’s wife Yanina and children Aaron and Ainhoa were inside their beachfront home when the earthquakes hit, according to the report. For the next three days, Trejo searched through the debris and appealed for additional heavy machinery as rescue efforts continued.
His brother-in-law Ricardo Ardiles told media that Trejo was emotionally overwhelmed and that almost nothing remained of the building.
“What he found was a horrific scene,” Ardiles told the outlet.
Friends and fellow footballers also appealed publicly for machinery and support as search efforts continued.
On Sunday, Club Sport Martimo La Guaira confirmed that Trejo’s wife and children had died.
The club said it “deeply mourns the irreparable loss” and added: “Lucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you.”
Venezuela’s earthquakes have left widespread destruction, with authorities reporting more than 1,400 deaths and thousands still missing. The disaster has also affected the country’s football community. Venezuelan youth international Yimvert Berroteran was among those confirmed dead, while several players and families connected to the sport have also been impacted.
