LeBron James is reportedly set to begin a new chapter in his remarkable NBA career after informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to play for another team next season, bringing an end to an eight-year stint with the franchise that delivered an NBA championship and countless milestones.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, James made the decision before the start of NBA free agency to avoid putting himself in a position where he would have to wait on the Lakers' offseason plans. Instead, the four-time NBA champion informed the organization that he would be moving on, allowing the franchise to proceed with its roster-building strategy.

James officially becomes a free agent when the league's free agency period opens at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday (3:30 a.m. IST on July 1), with several contenders expected to pursue the NBA's all-time leading scorer.

END OF AN ERA

James joined the Lakers in 2018 after two spells with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a successful four-year run with the Miami Heat. During his time in Los Angeles, he guided the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship, winning the title inside the Orlando bubble during one of the most challenging seasons in league history.

Even in his 23rd NBA season, the 41-year-old continued to perform at an elite level. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds last season while extending his extraordinary longevity in the league.

Earlier this year, James became the first player in NBA history to earn 22 consecutive All-Star selections. In March, he also surpassed Robert Parish to become the league's all-time leader in regular-season games played, adding another record to a resume that already includes four MVP awards and the distinction of being the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 43,440 career points.

The Lakers acknowledged James' immense contribution in a statement from team governor Jeanie Buss.

"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers -- including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold," Buss said.

"We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."

WARRIORS EMERGE AS FRONT-RUNNERS

While James is expected to attract interest from multiple franchises, the Golden State Warriors have quickly emerged as one of the strongest contenders for his signature.

According to ESPN, Warriors forward Draymond Green opted out of his existing contract, a move believed to be aimed at restructuring his deal on more team-friendly terms. The financial flexibility created by that decision could help Golden State pursue James while also exploring a blockbuster trade involving Anthony Davis.

It is suggested James is willing to accept a significant pay cut if it allows him to join a situation that gives him the best chance to enjoy the final phase of his career. Having earned well over a billion US Dollars during his career, including endorsements, James is believed to be prioritising his happiness over maximising his salary.

Under NBA rules, the Lakers were the only team capable of offering James a contract close to the 50 million US Dollars annual salary he earned under his previous two-year, 101 million US Dollars deal. The Warriors, by comparison, are reportedly in a position to offer only the non-taxpayer mid-level exception worth approximately 15.1 million US Dollars.

Along with Golden State, the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers are also believed to be among the teams monitoring James' situation.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE LAKERS?

James' departure also marks the beginning of a new era for the Lakers.

His exit is expected to create roughly 50 million US Dollars in financial flexibility, giving the franchise room to reshape its roster as it prepares for the 2026-27 season. How the Lakers choose to utilise that cap space will be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.

For James, meanwhile, the focus shifts to finding what could be the final destination of one of the greatest careers in basketball history. Whether he reunites with familiar faces in Cleveland, returns to Miami, or forms a dream partnership with Stephen Curry in Golden State, his next move is set to dominate the NBA offseason.
