Amazon joins OpenAI and Anthropic to set up Forward Deployed Engineer team, invests $1 billion

Amazon has become the latest company to form a dedicated team of Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE) to help clients with new AI tools. The tech giant has invested $1 billion to set up this new internal FDE team within AWS, weeks after OpenAI and Anthropic started focusing on this role.

AI tools have become mainstream now, with almost every company wanting to have the most advanced AI models out there. But this comes with a new challenge – integrating AI tools in pre-existing systems. To tackle this challenge, OpenAI and Anthropic established separate AI service companies earlier this year with one role in focus – Forward Deployed Engineers, or FDEs. FDEs are engineers who work with the client and ensure that the AI tools can integrate with their systems. And now, Amazon seems to be following the same path, as the company announced a $1 billion dollar investment in setting up its own FDE team within AWS.

On Tuesday, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that it was creating a new internal organisation that will focus on Forward Deployed Engineering. The Amazon division announced a $1 billion internal commitment, as it looks to help customers build and deploy AI systems by embedding engineers directly within their teams.

The move comes as more companies move beyond experimenting with AI and look for outside help to make it part of day-to-day operations. Previously, this FDE model had raised concerns about whether it would be similar to the services usually provided by Indian IT firms like TCS or Infosys – modernising older systems with new technology.

Why is Amazon investing into FDE team?

In a post announcing the unit, AWS vice-president of frontier AI engineering and services Francessca Vasquez said customers now want to rebuild business processes with agentic AI and need expert engineers working directly with their teams.

That is, with this team, AWS will be able to send FDE engineers, about five or six, to one client at a time, who can then ensure that the client is able to get the most out of the agentic AI tools. Vasquez added the new organisation would be seeded with "thousands" of FDEs.

AWS states that its FDE teams will work with customers’ business, engineering and security teams to build production AI systems using their data, governance and processes.

The company aims to not only deliver systems quickly but also to leave behind teams that can operate on their own. "Customers leave AWS FDE deployments with both new solutions and new engineering capabilities," AWS said. AWS added that the engagements are built around business outcomes rather than billable hours.

According to AWS, its FDE teams are already working with customers including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, Ricoh, Southwest Airlines and the NFL.

Keep in mind that while AWS has created an internal team for FDE, OpenAI and Anthropic have formed separate service companies for this purpose, with each raising millions of dollars in fundraising. Google too is hiring thousands of Forward Deployed Engineers to meet the demand for enterprise AI products.

In case you are wondering about the salary for FDEs, Google Cloud’s listings show that the company is willing to pay a base salary in the range of $153,000 (roughly Rs 1.46 crore) to $222,000 (roughly Rs 2.12 crore) for US positions. On the other hand, OpenAI puts the package between $198,000 (roughly Rs 1.89 crore) to $335,000 (roughly Rs 3.2 crore) in a similar US listing.
