US-based startup Light has launched the Light Flip, a minimalist 5G flip phone that ditches social media, web browsing and other distractions in a bid to help users spend less time glued to their screens.

The Light Flip runs the company's custom LightOS, which strips away the distractions that define modern smartphones. There is no web browser, no social media apps, no email, no news feed, no app store and, perhaps most importantly, no infinite scrolling. Instead, it offers the essentials, including calling, texting, navigation, notes, music, podcasts, weather, alarms, a calculator, calendar, voice memos, hotspot support and even a built-in authenticator for two-factor authentication.

While the phone may remind you of the flip phones many of us carried in the early 2000s, the hardware isn't stuck in the past. The Light Flip supports 5G, dual SIM via nano-SIM and eSIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and USB-C charging.
To help keep you away from endless scrolling and add a touch of nostalgia, the Light Flip also skips features that have become standard on modern smartphones. There is no touchscreen and no external display. It features a 2.8-inch OLED display with a matte finish and 480 x 640 resolution, while a physical T9 keypad handles texting with predictive typing and voice-to-text support.
Under the hood powering the device is a MediaTek MT8873 octa-core processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone also includes a 50-megapixel rear camera that captures photos with a 12-megapixel lens. The phone also has stereo speakers, dual microphones with noise cancellation, a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Powering the device is a replaceable 1,800mAh battery, which Light claims can last around one and a half days on a single charge. The handset carries an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance and comes in six colours: Black, Navy, Red, Pink, Yellow and Light Grey.
According to Light, the phone is built around the idea of intentional technology rather than attention-grabbing technology. The company says it will continue adding useful tools through future software updates, but they will be offered as optional downloads instead of being pre-installed.

The Light Flip is available for pre-order at $299 (roughly Rs 26,000) as an unlocked device. In the US, buyers can also opt for Light's service plan starting at $39 per month, which includes 1GB of data and unlimited calls and texts under a two-year contract. The first batch of devices is expected to begin shipping in April 2027, with deliveries continuing through May.
