MacBook Neo gets more affordable, price drops by Rs 13,500 just before the festive season

Apple recently increased the prices of several MacBooks and iPads in India, making its products more expensive just a few months before the country's festive shopping season. While the company said the hike was driven by rising component costs, Apple fans can now breathe a little easier if they were planning to buy the new MacBook Neo. Vijay Sales has announced a new Back to School sale, bringing the MacBook Neo back to a much more attractive price. The laptop, whose price was recently revised to Rs 79,900, is now available on its website for Rs 69,900, thanks to a flat Rs 10,000 discount. Buyers using eligible HDFC Bank credit cards with EMI can save an additional Rs 3,500, taking the total discount to Rs 13,500.

With the bank offer applied, the MacBook Neo can effectively be purchased for Rs 66,400. Interestingly, Rs 69,900 was also the laptop's original launch price before Apple increased it by Rs 10,000. The current sale essentially cancels out that price hike for buyers who were waiting for a better deal.

Is it worth buying?

The MacBook Neo is currently Apple's most affordable laptop in India. At the same time, the latest MacBook Air M5 is selling on Vijay Sales for around Rs 1,39,900, creating a price difference of roughly Rs 70,000 between the two models.

That gap makes it clear who the MacBook Neo is meant for. Apple is positioning it as an entry-level Mac for first-time buyers, especially people switching from Windows laptops. The company's own marketing describes it as "love at first Mac" and even says built-in antivirus protection, something many PC users look for when buying a new computer.

For everyday tasks, the MacBook Neo should be more than capable. Web browsing, document editing, online classes, streaming videos, emails, photo management, and even light photo or video editing run smoothly. Most of these activities depend more on single-core performance, an area where the laptop performs well.

However, users who regularly edit large videos, compile code, run local AI models or perform other demanding workloads may find its limits sooner. These types of tasks make full use of the processor, and in such cases, the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro would be a better long-term investment.

Another limitation is memory. The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of RAM and there's no option to upgrade it. While that may sound restrictive on paper, macOS manages memory efficiently by intelligently shifting inactive data to the SSD when needed. For the target audience, this should be enough for multitasking with dozens of browser tabs, messaging apps, music streaming and background applications running together.

Battery life is another strong point. Under typical usage, users can expect up to 16 hours of battery life on a single charge.

Apple has also retained several features that have made MacBooks popular over the years. The large trackpad continues to be one of the best in the industry, offering smooth gesture controls. The dual speakers support Spatial Audio and deliver surprisingly rich sound for an entry-level laptop.

Of course, there are a few compromises to keep the price low. The MacBook Neo misses out on features like Touch ID, a backlit keyboard, True Tone display technology, fast charging, Wi-Fi 7, and support for multiple external displays. It also uses a 1080p webcam without Center Stage and has one fewer microphone than the MacBook Air.

Even with these trade-offs, the MacBook Neo makes a compelling case for buyers who simply want an Apple laptop for work, studies and entertainment without spending over Rs 1 lakh. With the festive shopping season around the corner and prices temporarily reduced, this could be one of the better times to pick one up.
