Microsoft reveals Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by new Nvidia super chip
Microsoft and Nvidia want to reinvent the PC, with a focus on AI agents. One of the first devices to embark on this change will be Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra. From up to 128GB of RAM to a mini-LED display, here is everything you need to know.

For decades, the personal computer has largely followed the same formula. But AI is changing things, and now companies, in particular, Microsoft and Nvidia want to reinvent the PC. During Computex 2026, Nvidia announced the new RTX Spark super chip designed to bring this change. And now, Microsoft has unveiled its first device to use this chip, the Surface Laptop Ultra.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is expected to be Microsoft’s flagship PC. The company states on its website, the “Surface Laptop Ultra is the most powerful Surface Laptop ever built.”
Official images hint towards a premium design for the Laptop Ultra. Keep in mind that Nvidia has previously stated that the RTX Spark is designed for slim laptops – with a thickness of as much as 14mm.
Before we begin, do note that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed that the company will be sharing more details about the Surface Laptop Ultra at Microsoft Build that is scheduled to start on June 2 in San Francisco, USA. Nadella wrote on X, "Looking forward to sharing more with Jensen, who will be joining us live from Taiwan, at Build this week!"
Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra performance and AI
And as far as specs go, the Surface Laptop Ultra seems to pack a punch. The device
uses Nvidia's RTX Spark chip, adapted from the DGX Spark mini-PC and tuned for Windows 11. Microsoft and Nvidia say it can offer up to 20 CPU cores, 6,144 GPU cores, up to 1 petaflop of AI compute and graphics roughly comparable to an RTX 5070 laptop GPU.
The Laptop Ultra is expected to come with up to 128GB of LPDDR5X RAM as unified memory. Unified memory allows RAM to be shared across CPU and GPU depending on workload. Microsoft says that should help with 3D work, long compile cycles, local AI models and heavy multitasking, while you also get full CUDA support. As per reports, the device is expected to come with a dual-fan cooling setup.
A key focus of RTX Spark is agentic AI. As per Nvidia, you can run up to 120-billion parameter AI models locally on RTX Spark-powered devices. There is also support for running AI agents on Nvidia’s OpenShell platform with new security measures.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra display and features
The new flagship Surface device will get a 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen with a PPI of 262, and up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness. Microsoft says it is the brightest Surface display so far. The machine weighs under 4.5 pounds (2.04kg) and comes in Platinum and Nightfall finishes. It also carries the largest haptic touchpad ever fitted to a Surface.
Thanks to the new RTX Spark chip, Microsoft is promising all-day battery life on the Surface Laptop Ultra. Though we don’t have details on the battery size or charging speeds just yet.
Ports include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, a full-size SD card slot and a headphone jack, though Microsoft is still not saying what versions or speeds buyers will get. The company also says the laptop has been designed with durability and repairability in mind.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra launch and expected price
Microsoft states that the Surface Laptop Ultra will launch “later this year.” However, the company has not given any word on the potential pricing of the device just yet.
Keep in mind that this is the second time when Microsoft has joined hands with Nvidia to power a Surface device. In 2012, the company launched the Surface RT with an Nvidia ARM-based chip. Though the company lost roughly $900 million in that project at the time.
