Railway staff in Mumbai were in for an unusual surprise late Tuesday night after a baby python was found inside a railway engine at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

The snake was spotted inside the engine by railway workers, who immediately alerted wildlife rescuers and experts.

Following the alert, Abhishek Ashok Thaware, Honorary Animal Welfare Officer of the State of Maharashtra, rushed to the station to assist with the rescue.

Taking necessary precautions, Thaware safely captured the baby python at around 1.40 am. The timely rescue ensured railway operations continued without disruption.

The rescued hatchling was later released safely into its natural habitat.

Experts identified the snake as an Indian rock python, a non-venomous species protected under India’s Wildlife Protection Act. The species plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance by helping regulate prey populations.

According to experts, increased snake sightings are common during the monsoon season in Maharashtra, as wildlife often moves into human settlements in search of dry and secure shelter. Preliminary estimates suggest the baby python may have entered the railway engine to escape the rain.

Thaware said such incidents are common during the rainy season and urged citizens not to panic if they encounter snakes.

He advised people against attempting to capture or kill snakes and instead asked them to contact the forest department or trained snake rescuers to ensure both human safety and wildlife conservation.
