A Bangladeshi cop used AI to alter the jersey of a man arrested for drug peddling.

A police officer in Bangladesh landed in trouble after using artificial intelligence (AI) to digitally change the football jersey worn by an arrested suspect before the image was shared through official police channels.

The unusual edit, which replaced an Argentina jersey with a Brazil one, prompted criticism online and led to disciplinary action.

According to The Daily Star, the incident took place in Barishal, where 35-year-old Russell Hawlader, an alleged drug dealer, was arrested on Monday afternoon from Mohammadpur Colony in Ward 5 of the city.

After the arrest, Sub-Inspector Tanzil Ahmed of the Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) allegedly used AI tools to alter the suspect's photograph, replacing the Argentina football jersey he was wearing with a Brazil jersey.

The edited image was then circulated to journalists through email and the BMP media WhatsApp group, The Daily Star reported.

The altered photograph soon caught the attention of football fans on social media, many of whom pointed out that the image appeared to have been digitally manipulated. The controversy quickly gained traction, with users criticising the police for editing official evidence.

Following the backlash, the Barishal Metropolitan Police withdrew the edited image and redistributed the original, unaltered photograph along with the correct information, according to The Daily Star.

The report states that SI Tanzil Ahmed has now been served a show-cause notice and removed from his responsibility of operating the BMP media WhatsApp group. BMP Commissioner Md Ashik Sayeed said that the officer has been asked to explain his actions within three days, after which further action will be decided.

Commissioner Ashik also said the officer admitted to making the edit. According to reports, Tanzil claimed he believed replacing the Argentina jersey with a Brazil shirt would generate greater public attention and discussion at a time when excitement around Brazil's FIFA World Cup campaign was running high.

The bizarre episode has reignited conversations around the responsible use of AI, particularly by public authorities, with many arguing that official images should remain accurate and unaltered regardless of intent.
