British tourist expected one thing at Chennai's Marina Beach, saw another. Watch
British travel vlogger Jack Heaton said Chennai's Marina Beach looked cleaner than social media suggested. His video drew praise from users who said it showed a side of India often missed online.

A British travel vlogger who arrived at Chennai’s Marina Beach expecting scenes often portrayed on social media was left surprised by what he found instead - golden sands, clear blue water and a relatively clean shoreline.
“Social media completely lied to me about India,” read the text overlay on a video posted by travel enthusiast Jack Heaton during his trip to Chennai.
The remark appeared to reference viral videos and online posts that often portray Marina Beach as heavily littered and overcrowded, shaping a largely negative perception of the popular Chennai landmark before his visit.
In the video, Heaton appeared visibly surprised by the beach’s cleanliness, saying the experience contrasted sharply with the image of India often portrayed online.
“Would you believe that this is in India? Just literally, that is the city of Chennai. So, it looks really clean, there’s barely any rubbish - there are a few little bits, but not a lot at all,” he said.
He also compared the beach to coastal areas in England, praising the clarity of the water.
“The water, that is cleaner than the water on the coast of England. I mean, don’t get me wrong, but to tell you, it’s crystal clear blue. It’s not the Maldives, guys, but it’s not bad,” he said.
In the caption accompanying the post, Heaton said seeing the place in person reinforced his belief that India is far more diverse than online narratives often suggest.
“Honest opinions always. Marina Beach, Chennai. Now I didn’t believe everything I saw online anyway, but to see things for myself, it’s pretty clear India is a diverse place and sometimes only gets shown in negative light,” he said, adding: “Obviously not everything’s perfect, but Marina Beach did positively surprise me.”
